Plastic takes approximately 450 years to decompose in a landfill. Although these plastic materials are able to eventually decompose, every single plastic leaks harmful chemicals into our environment. Besides that, there are not many ways that individuals can take to dispose of plastic properly. Therefore, this article will give several ideas on how to reuse plastic bottles.
1. Decorations
Plastic bottles have several properties that allow it to be used for a wide range of decorations. Plastic bottles generally can be painted or redesigned to take on various shapes and forms. The only thing that is limiting the usage of plastic is your creativity!
As you can see, Sarah Turner, an eco artist is repurposing plastic by turning them into various interesting and aesthetically pleasing decorations. From the picture above, the items that give out light are made from recycled waste products (primarily plastic bottles) obtained from local cafes and households.
The bottles are washed and sandblasted. This method converts the usually transparent plastic into an opaque material, making it easier to manually sponge-dye, which results in vibrant colors.
2. Gardening
Looking for a way to upcycle plastic bottles? You can reuse them in the garden in some ways.
As shown in the picture above, plastic bottles can be used as a substitute for pots to plant your seedlings. Besides that, plastic bottle can be used as a watering can. To do this, you would just need poke some holes in the cap of the plastic bottles and fill the plastic bottle up with water.
You can also make a sprinkler for your lawn using a plastic bottle as well. The process of making it is quite similar to the DIY watering can above. However, instead of poking holes through the cap, you poke holes on one side of the plastic. After that, attach the bottle with your garden hose and fill it up with water and viola! Once the bottle is filled up, water is going to squirt out from the top.
3. Piggy bank
A piggy bank is easy to make yet practical. All you need is a plastic bottle and some caps and you are set to make a piggy bank of your own! Just cut a small hole into the plastic bottle so that you are able to insert coins into it. Then, glue some caps onto the body of the plastic bottle to make sure that it doesn't roll away. The piggy bank can be designed however you want and it encourages children to start saving and recycling frm a young age.
4. Item storage
Since plastic bottles are great for storing items, it would be a waste to throw them away when you can repurpose them into storage for various items. The pictures below show that plastic bottles can be used as a garage storage, magazine holder, and utensil holder, and food storage in the kitchen.
5. Toothbrush holder
The cap of plastic bottles can be reused to hold toothbrushes. They can look extremely nice if you have different colored caps. To make this one, you will need a board to glue the caps on, then you will have to measure the distance between the caps so that it is able to hold the toothbrush without any problem.
6. Makeshift furniture
Plastic bottles are durable and are able to withstand heavy weights. These properties are great for making sustainable furniture.
Designers and DIY enthusiasts are going to love this project because they are able to utilize their skills in making these practical and eco-friendly furniture. Plastic bottles are light so moving these around won't be a problem either.
